Celestial Folk….
Creating with nostalgia in mind.
Part of my decorative painting journey has involved embracing my joy for simple folk art patterns. Looking into the origins of folk art and how it is used. Historically folk art was used as a means of story telling. Painting onto primitive objects that would be used daily, in simple colourways to celebrate the seasons and local surroundings. Its naivety and bold brushstrokes sparking a naïve wonder .
Recently I’ve been experimenting with pattern and the night sky.
As a little girl i would look to a moonlit night as source of excitement but also a constant companion, embracing the enchantment of the moons changing cycles and the bright stars twinkling. Magic on repeat, night after night.
Fast forward many moons and I’m still enamoured.
Combining my love of folk and the night sky felt like putting on a my favourite slippers. With trepidation I painted my first piece as part of my Annie Sloan residency whereby I imagined capturing elements of the sky and putting them in a vase of flowers to be enjoyed by candlelight. They sold straight away to a fellow night sky dreamer. Magic!
Now I can be found regularly painting simple floral patterns embellished with the moon and stars, such Joy.
